Team - Ashley Halkett, Jamie Coltman, Adam Duncan, Justin Vajler, Jason Stevens, Barney Webber
Anthony Bloomfield, Michael P Duncan, Graeme Freshwater, Tim Cranwell, Kris Wells
Latrobe entered the 2004/2005 first grade final with some confidence,
having destroyed Mirboo North in the Semi Final the week before.
Morwell won the toss and batted, and by lunch had reached 3-92,
with Davin Charleston and Steve Reside well set and looking to build
a large score. The introduction of Freshy's spin after the break
put the brakes on the scoring and shortly after the wickets began to
tumble. Morwell was dismissed for 153 with Barney 3/27, Freshy 3/21
and Ashley Halkett 2/17 the main wicket takers.
Latrobe's batting had approx two and a half hours to bat prior to
stumps on the first day. Three wickets in the first ten overs were
not the ideal start but Michael "Funky" Duncan and Kris Well saw
the side through to stumps without further loss & the addition of
another 85 runs. The score at the end of day 1 was 3/124, with Funky
on 55 and Wellsy on 32.
Another thirty runs were required to pass Morwell's score at the
commencement of the second days play and this was achieved in the
11th over of the day following the loss of two more wickets. By this
time Wellsy had reached his half century and the aim was to bat
Morwell out of the game. When the score had slumped to 7/170 Morwell
must have thought they were still in with a slim chance, but Wellsy
was still at the wicket and scoring freely. With the support of Adam
Duncan and Jason Stevens, Wellsy reached a well deserved century and
was eventually dismissed for 125 with the game well and truly won.
This was the fourth time that Latrobe had won the CGCA first grade
premiership, and Kris Wells was named as man of the match.
